ELIGIBILITY
What we look for, and what you will need
Dova drivers operate on a Southampton City Council (SCC) private hire licence. We expect you to either hold one already or be actively pursuing one. The licence itself is issued by SCC, not by Dova — but we are happy to share what has worked for our existing drivers if you are still in the application process.
Valid SCC PHV driver licence — or actively applying. If you are mid-application, we can share guidance on what to expect.
Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate dated within the last 3 years, or DBS Update Service subscription.
Full UK driving licence held for at least 3 years.
Own vehicle is a plus — must have a current SCC PHV vehicle plate and valid MOT if used for Dova work.
Right to work in the UK and a valid UK mobile number for SMS / WhatsApp.
Airport, cruise, and late-night readiness are strong advantages — much of our work is pre-dawn or post-midnight.
Professional conduct, punctuality, and calm customer handling — especially with Chinese-speaking families and elderly passengers.

Selected applicants share their SCC PHV driver badge, DBS, driving licence, and vehicle paperwork (if applicable), then review and sign terms. We can walk you through any items still in application.
Step 4
Probation to active
You begin with a probation period before becoming an active Dova driver.

Questions drivers usually ask first
Yes — Dova drivers operate on the Southampton City Council (SCC) PHV licence. If you do not have one yet but are seriously considering it, apply to us anyway. We will share our experience helping new drivers through the SCC process. The licence itself is issued by Southampton City Council Licensing, not by Dova.
We can share what has worked for our existing drivers — common pitfalls, documents to prepare, realistic timelines — but the application itself goes through SCC Licensing. We cannot apply on your behalf, and we cannot guarantee an outcome.
SCC PHV driver badge + photocard, Enhanced DBS certificate, full UK driving licence, right-to-work proof, and (if using your own car) the vehicle SCC PHV plate and current MOT.
No. Having your own SCC PHV-plated vehicle helps, but we still want to hear from strong candidates. If you do bring your own car, it must already carry a current SCC PHV plate and a valid MOT.
Yes. Part-time, weekend, and flexible availability are all welcome if you are responsive and reliable. A PHV licence is still required regardless of full or part-time.
