Ocean, Mayflower, City or Horizon? Southampton Cruise Terminals Explained
The biggest mistake at Southampton Cruise Port is assuming that "Southampton Cruise Terminal" means one single place.
It does not.
Southampton has five main cruise terminals: City, Horizon, Mayflower, Ocean and QEII. For passengers with luggage, elderly parents, children, or a pre-booked private transfer, the useful question is more specific:
Are you going to the Eastern Docks or the Western Docks?
This guide is not a broad tourist article. It is a boarding-day checklist for passengers who want the car, luggage and terminal details clear before cruise day.
The Simple Rule: Ocean Is East; Mayflower, City And Horizon Are West
Associated British Ports explains that Southampton's cruise terminals sit across two dock areas: Eastern Docks and Western Docks. Eastern Docks covers QEII and Ocean Cruise Terminal. Western Docks covers Mayflower, Horizon and City Cruise Terminal.
| Terminal | Dock area | Practical booking note |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks | Use Dock Gate 4 |
| QEII Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks | Use Dock Gate 4 |
| Mayflower Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Dock Gate 10 or Dock Gate 20 when driving |
| City Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Use Dock Gate 10 |
| Horizon Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Use Dock Gate 10 |
The least useful instruction is: "Southampton Cruise Terminal."
A better booking note is:
Ocean Cruise Terminal, Eastern Docks, Dock Gate 4
or:
Horizon Cruise Terminal, Western Docks, Dock Gate 10
Ocean Cruise Terminal: Eastern Docks, Not The Same Side As City Or Horizon
Ocean Cruise Terminal is in the Eastern Docks. ABP advises passengers to access it from A33 Platform Road and follow signs for Dock Gate 4.
This matters because Southampton port is not a normal car park where a driver can simply circle around. If a passenger needs Ocean but the car goes to the Western Docks, the delay can involve dock gates, port traffic, security checks and re-routing.
For Dova bookings, send the ship name and write:
Ocean Cruise Terminal / Eastern Docks / Dock Gate 4.
If you are flying into Heathrow or Gatwick before a cruise, also send the flight number. The route from airport arrivals to the cruise terminal should be planned as one journey, not guessed at the port entrance.
Mayflower Cruise Terminal: Western Docks, But Do Not Treat It Like City Or Horizon
Mayflower is in the Western Docks, but it is not interchangeable with City or Horizon. ABP says Mayflower can be accessed from A33 West Quay Road via Dock Gate 10. It can also be reached via Dock Gate 20 from the M271 and Redbridge Road direction, followed by a drive through the docks.
That detail matters for cruise passengers with luggage.
Mayflower is exactly the kind of terminal where clear pickup instructions make the journey calmer. If you are travelling with two large suitcases, hand luggage, elderly parents or children, this is not the moment to improvise.
For transfer bookings, use:
Mayflower Cruise Terminal / Western Docks / confirm Dock Gate 10 or Dock Gate 20 if driving.
City Cruise Terminal: Western Docks, Not Just "Somewhere Near The City"
City Cruise Terminal sounds simple, but the name can mislead passengers. It is still a cruise terminal inside the Western Docks.
ABP says City Cruise Terminal is accessed from A33 West Quay Road via Dock Gate 10. After Dock Gate 10, drivers should follow the terminal directions inside the port.
City and Horizon are among the more walkable terminals from Southampton Central, but walkable is not the same as sensible. ABP notes that Southampton Central is about a 15-minute walk from City and Horizon, while Mayflower and Ocean are around 30 minutes on foot.
One traveller with a small suitcase may be fine walking. A family with cruise luggage should not turn embarkation day into a luggage workout.
Horizon Cruise Terminal: Western Docks, Newer Facility, Still Needs Confirmation
Horizon Cruise Terminal is also in the Western Docks and uses Dock Gate 10. It is one of Southampton's newer cruise facilities, but passengers should not assume their ship is there just because the terminal is modern.
Terminal allocation depends on the ship, cruise line, sailing date and port arrangements.
The right question is not:
"Does this cruise line usually use Horizon?"
The right question is:
"What terminal is printed on my ticket or confirmed for my exact sailing date?"
If the ticket or cruise app shows Horizon, send that screenshot before the transfer. If it changes, tell the driver before pickup day.
The Three Mistakes That Cause Most Cruise Transfer Problems
The first mistake is booking a car with only "Southampton cruise port" as the destination. That is not enough.
The second mistake is dropping a broad map pin somewhere near the port. You need the passenger terminal drop-off point, not just the port estate.
The third mistake is assuming every terminal is easy to walk from Southampton Central. Some routes may be walkable for light travellers, but cruise passengers are rarely light travellers.
For passengers with multiple bags, elderly relatives or children, a private transfer is not a luxury. It is risk control.
What To Provide When Booking A Southampton Cruise Transfer
Before asking for a quote, prepare these details:
- cruise line
- ship name
- sailing date
- terminal name from your cruise documents
- pickup address or airport terminal
- passenger count
- number of large suitcases
- number of hand luggage items
- whether elderly passengers or children are travelling
- whether the journey starts from Heathrow, Gatwick, a hotel, Southampton Central or a local address
Dova can then confirm whether the journey is a local Southampton cruise terminal transfer, a Heathrow to Southampton Cruise Terminal transfer, or a Gatwick to Southampton Cruise Terminal transfer.
Useful Dova Pages For Cruise Passengers
| Need | Useful page |
|---|---|
| Local hotel, station or home to the port | Southampton Cruise Terminal Transfer |
| Heathrow arrivals to the ship | Heathrow to Southampton Cruise Terminal |
| Gatwick arrivals to the ship | Gatwick to Southampton Cruise Terminal |
| Chinese-speaking transfer support | Southampton Chinese Driver |
| Family travel with luggage | Family Airport Transfers Southampton |
Final Word: Do Not Leave Cruise Day To Guesswork
Southampton Cruise Port is not difficult, but it punishes vague instructions.
The only distinction that really matters is:
Ocean and QEII = Eastern Docks / Dock Gate 4. Mayflower, City and Horizon = Western Docks / mainly Dock Gate 10, with Mayflower also accessible via Dock Gate 20 when driving.
For a solo traveller with one small bag, a wrong terminal is an inconvenience. For a family, elderly passengers or cruise guests arriving from Heathrow or Gatwick, it becomes avoidable stress.
Confirm the terminal before you travel. Send the ship name. Send the ticket screenshot. Make the pickup point unambiguous.
Dova Travel provides Chinese-speaking airport and cruise transfers in Southampton, with clear arrangements before you arrive.
